2010 RMMA Kukkiwon Black Belt Test
According to many Masters and Instructors, learning Martial Arts actually begins when you earn your first black belt. If that is true 10 Rocky Mountain Martial Arts students began their education on Saturday October 9, 2010 although it took an average of 5.4 years for the ten students to reach the goal of 1st Dan black belt. 62 year-old Mike Denny continued his education by earning his 3rd Dan. Mike has taught the youth classes at RMMA going on fourteen years.
The RMMA students endured a 6 hour test on their way to earning their Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Federation Black Belts). Kukkiwon is the world governing body for Taekwondo. Such status is recognized the world over and the holder is readily recognized and meet the requirements to compete in sanctioned events such as National and International tournaments, National team try outs and World Olympic try outs..
The test was held at the RMMA facility located at 3233 Kennedy Ave in Butte. School owner Master Jim Miller conducted the test with Black Belts 1st Dan Teri McGee and Jeff Beckett and 3rd Dan Bill Pascoe and Vincent Wriston judging.
The test was closed to the public for the first 3 hours then opened for friends and family to watch the remaining hours. The total hours covered education, history, philosophy, knowledge, endurance, technique, forms, sparring, self-defense using Taekwondo techniques as well as Judo and Aikido techniques, free fighting, 20 minutes of non-stop sparring with lower and equal rank students and wound up with board breaking with each student breaking eight boards within 5 stations. The students also had to officiate and judge matches and forms.
The students had gone through months of preparation and struggled through injuries and illnesses during those months and during the test. Every time they were asked if they were okay and if they wanted to continue the answer was always yes. The determination and courage was immeasurable and shown through to make this a proud and memorable occasion for everyone at RMMA including the parents, grandparents and friends.
Earning promotions were:
Rocky Mountain Martial Arts was visited by over 150 well wishers ranging from old students and their parents to about 75 present students that stayed for both a 2 hour workout and a 3 stage Chili dinner prepared by Darlene Beckett. The event was the celebration of Jim Miller's 70th birthday - 12 years in our present location - plus the promotion of nearly 1000 students. The day was marked by fun and congeniality that remained throughout the day. Our newly renovated kitchen made it so much easier to service the guests and provided for much more room for tables, it will also allow students to book birthday parties at RMMA. RMMA would like to thank all those that worked so hard to make our celebration such a great success. Here's hoping for another twelve.
