Looks like cold weather is on the way. This will make for a real, real short fishing window; atleast until we get another warm weather blast.
Try using a small Mayfly nymph under a Parachute or a smaller Stonely nymph or a San Juan Worm under a larger foam bodied attractor. Once you do see fish up and rising in their spots switch it up to what their eat'n! - Give us a call at the shop ifwe can help...This can be a great time to be on the water, enjoy!

Fly Fishing Montana with The River Otter Fly Shop and Outfitters
The following Rock CreekFishing Report is brought to you by the Rock Creek Mercantile.
October23rd- Fishing this October has been especially good. The warmer, milder weather has produced some good dry fly fishing, and I received reports as late as yesterday that even grasshoppers are still out. The top dry fly, currently, is the baetis, and there are decent hatches of them in the evenings. A combination of them and red attractors will bring up some trout.
Mornings are getting colder and colder, so if you come out, I'd wait until the afternoon to fish. Copper Johns and princes are some of the better nymphs right now, and of course, streamers are still pulling out big fish. The three big colors are yellow, olive, and black, but as I've mentioned before, they aren't being too picky about whatthey chase.
We are supposed to get an influx of colder weather starting next week, so I will update the page when I know what it does to the fishing conditions. More in a few days...

The following Fishing Report is provided by Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig.
Well, we cant say the fishing is great, but we wont say its terrible either. Its kind of relative. Last week of October you expect it to be off the hook, and it aint. The recent storm system didnt bring the weather or precipitation that was forecast. Temps have cooled way off, and higher peaks to the east of Craig have some fresh snow on them. The sun is back out today, and the bright conditions wont help the efforts of streamer and dry fly anglers. Heres the truth:
The river is high at 4800 cfs. Higher than most of you are used to in late October. When hatches are sparse, higher flows hurt.
BWOs are trickling off and localized. When you find enough bugs in the right conditions, youll find plenty of little guys and a few big noses. Best bets are Wolf Creek Bridge to Craig, Pelican to Cascade, and side channels everywhere.
Nymphing continues to be a bit of a disappointment, especially below Holter Dam. Its not a great fall back plan. Youll definitely catch more big fish hunting heads or tossing streamers.
The Browns are returning to the river, and fishing near the mouth of tributaries can be good.
Streamer fishing is OK, but not what you expect of late-October. You may catch more Rainbows than Browns, which is unusal.
If you are looking for risers, late is better than early. If the wind lays down you will find some big fish up between 3:00pm and dark. Midges are a player for the last hour.
Angler pressure has diminished, so you can pretty much have the river to yourself.
So whats the good news? Well, when you do hang a big fish he may be really big. When you find risers, they arent that difficult (unless theyre keyed on midges). Same with streamers; after a mile of nothing a big brown will try to remove the guides from your rod. Izaaks is still open and rolling out great food. Upland hunting reports are pretty good, and I saw 2 respectable bull elk in the back of truck passing through Craig yesterday. The World Series starts tonight, and the bar will no doubt be packed with apres fishermen savoring the special and a whiskey. Halloween festivities will take place at Izaaks as well. The Fall Special ($300 trips) start on November 1st. So, while the fishing isnt what we want, its still our favorite time of year.
Inconsistent may be the best way to describe our current fishing. Kinda sums up 2010 when you think about it.
