After a couple of weeks of watching your baby fuss and drool and fuss, after a couple of months, you might have  finally seen that the first cute little tooth bud is  popping up through the gums. In the next couple of years,Over the next couple of years, your baby's smile will soon be be replaced by 2 rows of baby teeth.
The teeth of your baby may be very small, but they're very important. This teeth act as the placeholders for adult teeth. Lack of a healthy set of baby teeth, will cause your child to experience trouble while speaking and while chewing. This is why the stress on baby teeth care is high, and keeping them healthy is of paramount importance.

Caring for your Baby's Gums

The care for gums can start right away. Although, in the early stages, the care will never involve toothpaste and toothbrushes, instead, the steps outlined below should be
followed:

1. Look for a moistened soft piece of gauze or washcloth.

2. Very delicately wipe down your baby's gums a couple of times a day.  Preferably two times a day. It is recommended that you wipe the gums before bedtime and after feeding him/her or right before bedtime.

Wiping the gums will wipe out the bacteria and thus prevent them from clinging on to the gums. The reason for getting rid of bacteria is that bacteria can leave behind a kind of sticky plaque that will damage your infant’s teeth as they start popping up.

Brushing Your Baby's Teeth

After the period when the first baby teeth start to pop up, start using a toothbrush. The toothbrush you use should have a large handle, small head and a very soft brush.
In the early stages of the baby teeth, just wet the toothbrush but don't use toothpaste. When the teeth erupt, you can now start using toothpaste a bit about the size of a small grain. Brush the baby's teeth gently, front and back.
Keep brushing your baby's teeth till he/she is old enough to comfortably brush him/herself, while spitting the toothpaste and rinsing the mouth without assistance . This age is around 6-7 years. Always keep your eyes on the lookout for any signs of tooth decay -- mostly pits or spots on the teeth. Always take the child to the pediatric dentist for a dental exam. If you notice any problem, bring your child to a pediatric dentist for an exam.

Even if there you do not notice a problem, you should take your child to the dentist for her or his first dentist visit by the age 1. The pediatric dentist is going to give you advice on teething, baby tooth care, thumbsucking and fluoride.

Teething

It will take approximately two years before all of the baby/infant teeth have made their way through your child's gums. This process as each of the tooth emerges is called teething. This can be kind of a trying time for you and your baby.
This is because teething is very uncomfortable. This is why your baby will constantly cry in the days or weeks before each tooth pops up from the gums. Some babies can display teething symptoms, including; Swollen gums, drooling and slightly higher than normal temperature.
